Closely related to this are his references to Empedocles’s discussion of how something apparently teleological (purposive) can come from many occurrences of something without purpose. He frequently refers to this point in the notes. Nietzsche seems to deny both teleology and that there is any fundamental difference between organic and inorganic matter. These fairly extensive notes, with a continual emphasis on eternal becoming, on das ewig Werdende, were often based on excerpts from Lange’s History of Materialism (Geschichte des Materialismus), on Kuno Fischer’s massive study of Kant’s philosophy, on Kant’s Critique of Judgment (Kritik der Urteilskraft), and on Schopenhauer’s writings, to which Nietzsche added his own reflections and arguments.
