32 Acquaintances All this means that these are environments in which acquaintances flourish. Individuals often have plenty of time on their hands to pick up, through conversations and visual and oral impressions, partial information about other inmates and, indeed, members of staff. Closer friendships – buddy relationships and sexual liaisons – do exist although they are frequently the subject of control or official disapproval. It seems likely that acquaintanceship, as I have defined the term, is the more characteristic relationship although this itself could vary in degree from some fleeting or passing knowledge to something close to friendship or group solidarity.

The behaviour and appearance of children may be ways in which neighbours assess each other’s social and moral status. Further, a more child-centred sociology will recognize that children themselves have their own understandings of neighbourhood and neighbours and engage in their own neighbouring practices. Children may get to know adults other than their parents or other family members through either their parents’ friends or neighbours or through the parents of their own friends (Sue Milne, personal communication).

This is memorably described by Jane Jacobs: ‘Customs vary; in some neighbourhoods people compare notes on their dogs; in others they compare notes on their landlords. Most of it is ostensibly utterly trivial, but the sum is not trivial at all’ (quoted in Seabright 2005: 114). The location of such small reciprocities is important. For the most part, they take place outside, in the street, over garden fences or in some shared semi-public space: ‘The lawn is not private ground; it is an easily accessible public area.
