Asked Adam. ” When they arrived at the classroom, Mrs White was there already. But so was Mrs Thomas, James’s mother. She was the new school secretary. Like James, she’d only just started at the school. “Oh dear,” said Josie, who had noticed that the two women had very serious expressions on their faces. ” asked Adam. ” “Why not? ” “Yes, but think about it, Adam. Think how Mrs Thomas would feel. She’d be so embarrassed, and so would Mrs White. ” Adam thought about it. But he had no idea how any of them would feel.

If he was upset or worried about something, or hadn’t slept well and was feeling tired, or if he happened to find that particular bit of maths difficult, he sometimes found that he just couldn’t focus and made mistakes. Then he would get very upset. Being good at maths was one of the things that made him feel good about himself (no. 3 on his What makes me feel good about myself list), but making mistakes was no. 1 on the What makes me feel bad about myself list. He spent Thursday evening practising maths questions on his computer.

Later on, he sat in bed writing out maths questions and answers from a maths quiz book. Then, he couldn’t get to sleep. It was as if he couldn’t switch off his brain. He wanted to turn it off, just like he’d turned off his computer, but it wouldn’t turn off. He couldn’t stop thinking about numbers and quizzes and the possibility of winning. He put his on calming down CD. He counted backwards from a hundred – ten times. But at midnight, he was still awake. He woke Mum up and asked her to read to him.
