As I have explained before (Moeran 1997: 89–98), the clay used by Sarayama’s potters was extremely hard. It therefore had to be powdered, washed, sifted, and dried before being ready for the wheel. This work was carried out for the most part by the women in each household, although older men, who had more or less retired, occasionally helped out. Rock-hard lumps of clay were first hammered into smaller pieces, which were then taken down to clay crushers (known as karausu) powered by the community’s two streams running down through the valley.
